A flocculant is a chemical compound, usually a high molecular weight polymer, that facilitates the grouping of suspended particles in water to form larger flocs that can settle or be filtered easily.
Flocculants are normally used after coagulation —a process in which coagulants such as aluminum or iron salts are added to destabilize particles— and allow for accelerated settling in clarifiers or thickeners.
Its application is fundamental in sectors such as paper and pulp, mining, the agri-food industry and wastewater treatment plants.
Industrial wastewater treatment may require a combination of different products depending on the contaminants present.
The most common ones are coagulants and flocculants (to remove suspended solids and colloids), pH regulators (to adjust the acidity of the water before or after treatment), biocides (to control microbiological growth), antiscalants (to prevent deposits on membranes and pipes), heavy metal precipitants and activated carbon (to absorb organic micropollutants).
The appropriate selection depends on prior water analysis and the discharge limits required by regulations.
A pH neutralizer is a chemical—acidic or alkaline—added to water to adjust its acidity or alkalinity to levels safe for industrial processes or discharge into the receiving environment. The pH of the water directly affects the effectiveness of other treatments and the corrosiveness of the system.
In the chemical, food, and electroplating industries, it is common for effluents to have a pH outside the neutral range (6,5–9), requiring a neutralization stage before discharge. At SITRA, we automatically size and dose these products to guarantee continuous and precise control.
Physical water treatment includes processes such as filtration, sedimentation, flotation, and membrane separation—ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis—which do not involve chemical reactions. Chemical treatment, on the other hand, introduces products such as coagulants, flocculants, biocides, and corrosion inhibitors to modify the water's properties through chemical reactions.
In practice, most industrial wastewater treatment plants combine both approaches —along with biological treatments— to achieve the desired result with maximum efficiency.

The selection requires a detailed preliminary analysis: physicochemical characteristics of the water (hardness, pH, conductivity, turbidity, presence of metals or specific contaminants), type of production process, volume of water to be treated, quality objectives and applicable regulations regarding discharges.

De esta forma, el diagnóstico inicial (parámetros y objetivos) se traduce en una decisión basada en evidencia experimental, y no solo en criterios teóricos. El resultado es una propuesta de tratamiento con el tipo y la dosificación óptima de productos: coagulantes, floculantes, antiincrustantes, biocidas, reguladores de pH e inhibidores de corrosión, validada específicamente para el agua y el proceso de cada cliente.
