Project description

The SERENA project's main purpose is to address in a holistic way the nitrate pollution of groundwater resulting from human activities.

The problem is addressed through research into reducing nitrates released into the environment, as well as treating currently contaminated soils and groundwater.

Innovations are being considered to prevent the leaching of nitrates from waste or by-products from the energy sector (biogas production plants), as well as from the agricultural sector (fertilizers) and the livestock sector (slurry).

Likewise, SERENA aims to investigate innovative technologies for denitrification and monitoring of aquifer pollution, as well as provide alternative pathways and best treatment practices for contaminated sites.

Implementation period : October 20, 2024 to December 31, 2025
