All production processes generate waste that must be properly managed to minimize and mitigate its environmental impact. While waste generation is unavoidable, its subsequent management can give it a second life, extending its useful life and contributing to both ecosystem protection and a reduced carbon footprint.

At SITRA, aware of the importance of proper waste management for the environment, we have a Waste Management area responsible for providing the most suitable and sustainable solution for waste, always focusing on minimizing its impact on the environment.

One of the measures adopted for this purpose is the commitment to ensure that waste destinations are located as close as possible to their point of generation, minimizing fuel consumption during their transport.

Changing the storage capacity for the waste generated implies halving the number of annual trips

Another solution adopted has been to increase waste storage capacity. By switching to higher-volume storage systems, this translates into a significant reduction in the number of transfers.

For example, in a company that generates 2.000 tons of waste annually, by switching from a 10-ton storage system to a 24-ton system, SITRA has managed to reduce the number of road transports by more than half, thereby decreasing CO2 emissions by over 55% and contributing to a reduction in the production center's carbon footprint. This solution helps companies achieve their goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in Law 7/2021 on climate change and energy transition, which also establishes the obligation to calculate their carbon footprint.

This constant pursuit of a more sustainable world is also reflected in the fate of waste. The vast majority of it is sent to recovery centers such as biogas generation plants and/or composting facilities , thus extending its useful life.

A simple change to care for the environment

This optimization of transport, the pursuit of adding value to waste, and the selection of the nearest location translate not only into a reduced carbon footprint but also into greater respect and care for the environment. Ultimately, it's about moving ever closer to the much-desired circular economy, with the added benefit of cost savings for the client's installation.
