The joint venture Biomethane Initiatives, formed in 2022 by Sitra, a company of Grupo Gimeno, and Suma Capital, has begun construction of the Biomethane biogas plant Montes de Toledo, a project that will produce biomethane and compost, and is expected to become operational in 2024.

The investment for the construction of this plant exceeds €15 million and it will have the capacity to treat a wide variety of organic waste, generating 40 GWh of biomethane and 30.000 tons of solid fertilizer annually. It is worth noting that the biomethane generated will be equivalent to the annual consumption of 6.500 homes, and the resulting solid fertilizer will prevent the emission of 7.280 tons of CO2.2.

The initiative will become the main source of biomethane and fertilizer production in the region, thus advancing the vision of promoting sustainability, the development of renewable energies and job creation.

With an 85% stake held by Suma Capital and 15% by Sitra, the project combines the expertise of both partners. Sitra contributes its knowledge of waste treatment technologies, biogas digestion and purification, as well as its experience in the operation and maintenance of biomethane production plants. Suma Capital, for its part, contributes its experience and know-how as a recognized financial investor in the development and construction of biogas and biomethane plants in Spain.

Ricardo Sáez, CEO of Sitra, highlighted that “this project once again demonstrates the company's commitment to the development of renewable energies, which play a fundamental role in the decarbonization process and in the drive towards a circular economy.”

For his part, Sergio Fernández, Partner at Suma Capital, stated that “with Biomethane Initiatives we continue to advance in our purpose of joining forces with companies like Sitra that share our vision, laying the foundations for a more circular and sustainable economy through new infrastructure. We believe that this platform is a leader and unique in biomethane production assets.”

It is worth noting that the vehicle through which Suma Capital is carrying out this operation is the SCCIF III (SC Climate Impact Fund III) sustainable infrastructure fund launched in 2022 with the aim of fighting climate change through its specialization in energy efficiency and environmental projects.
