In recent months, Sitra has been awarded contracts for two of the largest PET recycling plants in Spain, which together process over 115.000 tons of recycled plastic waste annually. It is worth noting that Spain currently recycles 616.000 tons per year, meaning that the volume recycled at these plants represents more than 18% of the total amount of plastic recycled.
PET is currently the most widely used packaging material, therefore, food-grade recycled PET is very important, not only for its undeniable environmental advantages, but also because this process is becoming a great opportunity.
In this context, it is important to remember that to produce food-grade PET, flakes between 2 and 12 mm are needed, with a PET purity greater than 99.99%, which entails thorough cleaning of the PET residue, and therefore, intensive water consumption in this process.
In order to carry out this cycle in the most circular way possible, that is, reusing the purified wastewater in the cleaning process at a very high percentage and carrying out the process in the most reliable way possible, it is necessary to have the technology and experience that Sitra currently possesses.
All of this has led the company to achieve a large market share in the plastic recycling sector, and to establish itself as a leading company in water treatment, purification and reuse technologies in the industrial sector of our country, collaborating in the circular economy and the recycling of plastics, so important in the current environmental situation of our seas and oceans.
According to the European Green Deal, each member state must achieve at least 20% recycled plastic content used as raw material. In Spain, we already meet the required target of 20% recycled plastic incorporated by the plastics processing and recycling industries, demonstrating the significant industrial presence of this sector in our country and its promising future.
